## Common ground
All options are types of extension cords used to transmit electrical power or signals.
## Options at a glance
**8537.10 – Charging with protection**
- **Defining trait:** Contains built-in electrical components (e.g. surge protection, voltage conversion).
- **Typical examples:** USB charging cord with surge protector, smart extension with power regulation.
- **Best fit when:** The cord includes active electronics for safety or signal management.
**8544.30 – Automotive USB cables**
- **Defining trait:** Designed specifically for use in vehicles (e.g. car cigarette lighter to USB).
- **Typical examples:** Car USB charging cable, in-dash USB extension.
- **Best fit when:** Used in automobiles, often with vehicle-specific connectors or power sources.
**8544.42 – Fitted with connectors, ≤1,000 V**
- **Defining trait:** Has fixed connectors and rated for low to medium voltage (≤1,000 V).
- **Typical examples:** Household extension cord with plug and socket ends.
- **Best fit when:** Standard indoor/outdoor power extension with permanent connectors.
**8544.49 – NOT fitted with connectors, ≤1,000 V**
- **Defining trait:** No connectors; intended for field installation or custom wiring.
- **Typical examples:** Bare cable with ends ready to be terminated.
- **Best fit when:** Used by electricians or installers who will add their own connectors.
**8544.60 – Over 1,000 V (e.g. solar)**
- **Defining trait:** Rated for high voltage (>1,000 V), typically used in industrial or renewable energy systems.
- **Typical examples:** Solar panel DC extension cable, high-voltage outdoor wiring.
- **Best fit when:** Used in solar installations or other high-voltage applications.
## Key differences
| Option | Voltage Rating | Connectors? | Built-in Electronics? | Primary Use Case |
|-------|----------------|-------------|------------------------|------------------|
| 8537.10 | Varies | Yes | Yes (active) | Smart/protected charging |
| 8544.30 | Varies | Yes | No | Automotive power/data |
| 8544.42 | ≤1,000 V | Yes | No | General low-voltage extension |
| 8544.49 | ≤1,000 V | No | No | Custom installation |
| 8544.60 | >1,000 V | Usually no | No | High-voltage systems (e.g. solar) |
## How to choose
- Does it have built-in protection or power conversion? → 8537.10
- Is it used in a car? → 8544.30
- Does it have fixed connectors and ≤1,000 V? → 8544.42
- Does it lack connectors and ≤1,000 V? → 8544.49
- Is voltage >1,000 V (e.g. solar)? → 8544.60
## Overlaps & pitfalls
- A cord with connectors and surge protection could fit both 8537.10 and 8544.42 — prioritize **active electronics** over connector type.
- High-voltage cords (8544.60) may lack connectors, but the voltage rating is definitive.
- If a cord is used in a car *and* has surge protection, use **8537.10** if electronics are key; **8544.30** if automotive use is primary.
- No option clearly prioritizes "general household" — default to 8544.42 unless otherwise specified
