Ein auf ein Objekt gerichteter Infrarot-Laserimpuls wird reflektiert, kehrt entsprechend teilweise zurück und trifft auf die Empfangs-Diode, wo mittels Impuls-Laufzeitmessung die vom Laser zurückgelegte Strecke ermittelt wird.
Das Gerät dient je nach Ausführung der Messung von Entfernungen von bis zu 5000 m.
