A waveguide rotary joint transfers high-frequency, high-power RF and microwave signals between rotating and stationary components with minimal signal loss
Description : A Rotary Joint which is a mechanical device that allows the transmission of electrical signals between a rotating component and a stationary component without disrupting the flow or causing wear over time. They are used in satellite communications to allow signals to pass between a rotating antenna (to track a moving satellite or maintain signal alignment) and the fixed parts of the ground system. The joint plays a vital role in ensuring the overall functionality and efficiency of satellite communication systems by ensuring the uninterrupted transfer of RF signals. Whether coaxial or waveguide rotary joints they both serve the purpose of transferring RF signals between rotating and stationary parts, but differ in terms of the type of signal transmission medium, their frequency range, power handling capacity, size, and efficiency. Waveguide rotary joints are used for high frequency and high-power RF and microwave signals with very minimal signal/insertion loss. The waveguide size is selected based on the frequency of operation. The two connection interfaces are available in several geometric configurations/ layouts e.g F Type, U Type, L Type and I Type. A waveguide rotary joint typically consists of a fixed port that connects to the stationary part of the system, a mechanical interface that allows one part of the joint to rotate relative to the other and the actual path through which the electromagnetic wave travels, usually a metal tube that confines and guides the wave. Sliding contacts or couplings are used to ensure that the electrical connection remains intact between the rotating and stationary parts of the system. To avoid signal loss and to allow smooth rotation, rotary joints often use seals, bearings, and brushes that maintain the integrity of the connection while minimizing friction and wear.
